Translation Joust / Joute de traduction à la Médiathèque Michel Crépeau

The Translation Joust

Wednesday 26th of April, the English speciality classes of Jean Dautet high school confronted those of Valin high school in a translation joust. The text to translate was an extract from The Courage Game by Jeni Whittaker, whom we had the honour to welcome. We each read our own translated version of the passage and then argued on why it was more relevant. The mediator, Murielle Martin, would then decide which version was better when our translations diverged, and would occasionally ask the author herself when we wouldn’t come to an agreement. She would however have to translate what we said, Jeni Whittaker being English and thus not understanding everything. The author liked both of our versions, preferring a sentence on our side then another one on theirs. She declared no winners. Altogether, the translation work was rather fun to do and we very much enjoyed debating afterwards.
